Bulgarian wine celebrates International Mavrud Day

On October 26 Bulgarian wine celebrates. We too!

The International Mavrud Day is an annual wine event that honours the indigenous Bulgarian grape variety Mavrud, as well as Bulgarian wine and wine tourism as a whole on national and international level. Dedicated to one of the oldest and most distinctive Bulgarian grape varieties, the International Mavrud Day aims to introduce you to the world of Bulgarian wine, particularly from Mavrud, and pique your interest in and admiration for Bulgaria's viticulture and winemaking. It also aims to emphasize the remarkable harmony between tradition and innovation that drives modern Bulgarian winemaking, as well as showcase the quality and stylistic diversity of Bulgarian wines.

International Mavrud Day has become a prominent celebration of Bulgarian wine throughout the years, helping to improve the country's wine image by offering information and educating consumers through the complexity of Bulgarian wine. In charge of organising the event is the Bulgarian Association of Wine Professionals (BAWP). BAWP is a professional organization of Bulgarian wine experts from various fields. It allows them to interact, offer expertise in products and advise, develop new concepts and tactics, and work together continuously for the success of Bulgarian wine.

Bulgaria has one of the most ancient wine histories in the world. Bulgaria’s winemaking tradition, along with its symbol Mavrud, can be traced back to antiquity. This is the reason why this emblematic and authentic Bulgarian grape variety, Mavrud, has been chosen as the day's symbol. The focus on Mavrud is intended to highlight a particular wine style, quality, versatility and modern feel, which can now be found in a wide range of Bulgarian wines, regardless of variety.

About Mavrud

The Mavrud grape is an ancient indigenous grape variety that has been produced on Bulgarian soil since antiquity. Mavrud is a late to very late ripening variety, it ripens in late September to early October. Mavrud is one of the parents of other local varieties such as Evmolpia and Buket, which have recently regained popularity as well. The Mavrud grape is one of the best in Bulgaria for producing high-quality red wine.

The variety belongs to the Black Sea ecological-geographical group. Its area by 2019 is about 12,645 decares (1264 ha) and represents about 2% of all vine plantations in the country.

The Mavrud variety is also known as Mavrud (Romania), Mavroud (France), Mavroudi (Greece), Kaushansky (Moldova), Cachivela (Pomorie, Burgas - Bulgaria). It is planted mainly in Bulgaria, but is also found in Macedonia, Greece, Romania and Albania.

Mavrud's plantations in Bulgaria are mainly in Plovdiv and Pazardzhik districts in Central Bulgaria and less in Haskovo and Stara Zagora, on the Black Sea coast, the Danube plain (Montana, Vratsa, Pleven) and in the Struma Valley in South-Western Bulgaria.

The Wines from Mavrud

Mavrud is one of the best Bulgarian local varieties for producing high quality red wines. Mavrud grapes are used exclusively for the production of dry red wine, but exceptional dessert wines can also be produced in the case of ground cultivation, dense plantation, proper pruning and moderate loading.

The wines from Mavrud are usually dark, well-concentrated and with pronounced tannins. They develop their best qualities after oak ageing and have an excellent maturing potential. They are usually intensely coloured, extractive, with moderately high acidity, optimal content of phenolic substances and harmonious taste.
