In the Top nominations for Wine of the Year, Proefschrift Wine Concourse, Amsterdam 2022
On Monday 19 September, the winners of the autumn edition of the 34th Proefschrift Wine Concourse, Amsterdam 2022, were announced. Two Bulgarian wines surprised again with excellent price-quality, character and identity, reaching the final as Top nominations for Wine of the Year.
WHAT WE REGISTERED FOR THE CONCOURSE
For this edition we had decided to register only wones from a particular category - from dried grapes and only wines made from the Bulgarian indigenous grape variety Mavrud. Mavrud is the oldest Bulgarian wine grape variety and we consider it the most valuable.

PROEFSCHRIFT
"On Monday 19 September, the winning importers were honoured during Gastvrij Rotterdam (Popular event for Wine & Food professionals, held every September in the Netherlands). Wine professionals who visited Gastvrij Rotterdam on Monday 19 September could indulge themselves at the Wine Theatre. Following two years of 'low profile', the professional audience could enjoy the presentation of winners and finalists - white, red and dessert wines, of Proefschrift Wine Concourse again. Visitors had also the chance to taste the wines of the final selection of the 34th Proefschrift Wine Concourse: 116 in total, 75 of which were nominated wines and 15 were prize winners. The importers themselves were also present to support wines.
The registered wines were not only more than usually, but also extremely varied with high average level. Along with the established names among the importers we also saw a clear increase in young, often specialized companies in particular wine region or country. Partly due to the influence of these newcomers on the market, the number of contemporary wines is growing: wines from lesser-known regions/countries, particular grape varieties, vins nature, bio(dynamic), non-traditional wine styles, cool climate, modern/trendy.
As a result Proefschrift Wine Concourse meets an expanding range and offers even more attractive and often surprising wines for every taste preference – from fresh and lively to ripe, rich and fulfilling wines, for every budget an every type of catering industry.
Worth noticing for this edition is the proportion of the New World wines: larger, wider and with better quality than we were used to at the concourse in recent years.
Where oak aging was applied, its influence was limited or well-integrated. Blockbusters belong definitely to the past already.
The integration of the Vins nature into the regular categories was appreciated by the importers. So the number of categories was clear and manageable.
The large number of submissions for category G, wines above € 40,00, resulted in severe and an exciting competition within the category. It is worth saying that most of the wines in this category still bear a classic signature.
